HOPKINS
Hopkins is a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, known for being the self-proclaimed “Raspberry Capital of the World” (check out the giant raspberry statue downtown!). It is centered around its historic main street, on which, to quote the Hopkins website, “in under a quarter-mile radius, you will find groceries, doctors, a post office, a library, liquor and drug stores, arts, and entertainment”. It’s an exceptionally walkable “downtown” area, and the city utilizes it to host festivals throughout the year, such as farmers’ markets, Mainstreet Day, and the Raspberry Festival. In addition, Mainstreet features a diverse selection of restaurants, including a Tibetan restaurant and a Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant. There is also public transportation from Mainstreet to Minneapolis, allowing you to ride just one bus all the way to downtown.
A unique feature of Hopkins is their strict zoning laws, restricting house sizes to be only up to a certain percentage of the lot size. This keeps more of a small town feel, helping the neighborhoods to maintain their character.
Hopkins features fourteen local parks spread throughout the city, including Shady Oak Beach. This technically in Minnetonka but is owned jointly by the two cities, and offers a high dive, swimming beach, and rentable paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes. For other outdoor recreational activities, Hopkins is the start of five bike trails, a combination of paved and crushed limestone, that go in all directions around the metro area. Oak Ridge Country Club is in the northern portion of Hopkins, and offers golf, tennis, swimming, and reservable areas for weddings, etc.
If you’re looking for a suburb near Minneapolis with a small town feel, you might like Hopkins!
