MINNETONKA
Minnetonka is a large second ring suburb, spanning from Lake Minnetonka on the west side to St. Louis Park on the east side. Due to this, it’s considered the gateway to the lake, and is close to Minneapolis but still with a suburban feel. Because of its size, residents of Minnetonka can find all the amenities and features they would want.
Minnetonka’s park system is wide-spread, with 5 community parks and 44 neighborhood parks, providing plenty of outdoor spaces. In addition, Williston Fitness Center and The Marsh are two city-owned fitness and wellness centers. The Minnetonka Community Center has multi-purpose rooms hosting meetings and community education classes, and is located on the Lake Minnetonka LRT bike trail, a crushed limestone trail stretching 15 miles between downtown Hopkins and Carver Park Reserve in Victoria. The city of Minnetonka also operates Shady Oak Beach, a community beach with a high dive and kayak, canoe, and paddle board rentals. Glen Lake Golf Course has golfing and a driving range in the summer, and cross country skiing in the winter.
The headquarters of Cargill are located in Minnetonka, making it the top employer in the city proper. According to Forbes, Cargill is the top private U.S. company by revenue, and has been in all years since 1985, except for 3 years.
Ridgedale Center is the main shopping mall in Minnetonka, but there are also a variety of other shopping areas strewn about. There are a combination of chain and locally owned restaurants and shops.
Minnetonka includes parts of both Minnetonka and Hopkins school districts. Both offer Chinese and Spanish immersion elementary schools, and have high-level sports teams.
As a consequence of its size, Minnetonka has all types of house and neighborhood, ranging from winding roads with big houses and faux gated communities to more traditional grid streets and standard sized houses.
